Source data used for the BSBD compilation
Denmark
Gridded TIN models produced in 2006 by the Danish Geodata Agency based on a combination of modern measurements and digitized nautical charts.
The data set had a spatial resolution of 50 m, except for the North Sea area, where the resolution was 100 m. Please note that the bathymetry models is based on interpolation of data.
These background data sets are not freely available, but similar or higher density bathymetry data can be purchased. Contact distribution@dga.dk if you want to purchase data.
Sweden
Excerpt from the national depth database at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
For the EEZ area a 100m × 100m grid and for the territorial waters, due to legal restrictions, a grid of 500m × 500m grid have been used. For each populated cell the average value was extracted. For areas not covered by other digital information depth figures derived from the Swedish Maritime Administrations chart database have been used.
These background data sets are not freely available, but similar or higher density bathymetry data can be purchased (depending on clearance due to National law). Contact sma@sjofartsverket.se if you want to purchase data.
Finland
Depth figures from the official nautical charts (territorial waters) and recent high-resolution surveys (parts of the EEZ) from the Finnish Transport Agency.
In most of the Gulf of Finland and the Southern Bothnian Sea, for the EEZ 200m × 200m grids with average depths per cell have been used. Where no 200m resolution data is available in the EEZ, depth figures from the official nautical charts have been used instead. In the Finnish territorial waters, due to legal restrictions only depth figures from the official nautical charts have been used.
These data sets are not freely available, but similar or higher density bathymetry data can be obtained from FTA, depending on clearance due to national law.
Russia
Based on GEBCO 1 minute grid (see reference below)
Estonia
Excerpt from the national depth database at the Estonian Maritime Administration.
For the EEZ area a grid of approximately 50m × 50m was used. For each populated cell the average value was extracted.
Latvia
Based on 2006 excerpt from Latvian national depth database.
Resolution and quality vary.
Lithuania
Based on GEBCO_08 1 minute grid (see reference below)
Poland
Based on gridded excerpt from Polish national depth database (500m × 500m grid).
Source data has been interpolated prior to including it in the BSBD.
Germany
Gridded depth data supplied by the Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH)
The grid features a resolution of approximately 50m × 50m.
Gridded background bathymetry (GEBCO)
The areas of Lithuania and Russia are based on the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans GEBCO_08 grid:
The GEBCO_08 Grid, version 20100927, http://www.gebco.net/
All bathymetry outside the BSBD area displayed on this site is also taken from the GEBCO_08 grid.
Shore line
The shore line used for delineation of land and sea area is derived from the Swedish Maritime Administration's chart production database.
Land elevations
To obtain better gridding results in areas close to the coast, the shore line was used as a “zero depth contour” and different land elevation data sets were used to guide the gridding algorithm. The land elevations displayed in the web map are taken from the U.S. Geological Service GMTED2010 dataset.
